How do these countdowns work?

Every counter runs in your browser, against your own device clock and time zone. Nothing is sent to a server, so the number you see is the number where you are — which matters more than it sounds: a countdown computed in one time zone and read in another is wrong by up to a day at either end.

Days are counted as whole calendar days to the date itself, not as elapsed 24-hour blocks. If a holiday is tomorrow, the page says one day, whatever the hour.

What you’ll find on every countdown page

  • A live counter — days, hours, minutes and seconds, recalculated every second in your own time zone, never on a server.
  • The exact date, with the day of the week, for this year and the next few years — so you can see at a glance whether it lands on a weekend.
  • How the date is set — a fixed calendar date, a rule (the fourth Thursday in November), or an officially published date.
  • A shareable link and an embed snippet, so the same countdown can go into a message or onto your own page.
  • The date this page was last checked, at the top of every page.

Want all of them at once instead? The holiday date table puts every date on this site in one place — the next date, the weekday it lands on, how far away it is, and next year from January to December.

Frequently asked questions

How are the countdowns calculated?

Each countdown runs live in your browser, using your device’s clock and time zone, and counts down to midnight at the start of the event’s date. Nothing is sent to any server.

Are the holiday dates accurate?

Yes — fixed-date holidays (like Christmas on December 25) never change, and moving holidays (like Easter or Thanksgiving) use officially published dates for the coming years, reviewed regularly.

Is this site free?

Completely. Every countdown works without registration, on any device, and updates every second.

What is coming up

How we calculate this

Every counter on this site runs in your browser, against your own device clock and time zone. Nothing is sent to a server, so the number you see is the number where you are — a countdown computed in one time zone and read in another is wrong by up to a day at either end. Days are counted as whole calendar days to midnight at the start of the event’s date, not as elapsed 24-hour blocks: if a holiday is tomorrow the page says one day, whatever the hour.

Fixed-date holidays (Christmas on December 25) are calculated from the rule itself, so they can never drift. Moving dates fall into three groups, and each is handled differently. Rule-based ones (Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November) come from the published rule. Ones tied to the ecclesiastical calendar (Easter and everything anchored to it) use the computus. Ones tied to lunar observation (Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Chinese New Year) use officially published dates rather than a formula, because the exact day can be set by sighting and a calculated date would be confidently wrong. Every date carries the day of the week it lands on, and that is checked against the calendar automatically before each release.
