DaysUntilNow is a free collection of live countdowns to holidays, seasons and notable dates. It exists because “how many days until Christmas?” deserves a faster, cleaner answer than a calendar and mental arithmetic.
How the countdowns work
Every countdown runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, nothing is stored, and no account is needed. The page reads your device clock and time zone, so the number you see is the number where you are — not where the site is hosted. That matters more than it sounds: a countdown computed in one time zone and read in another is wrong for up to a day at either end.
Days are counted as whole calendar days to the date itself, not as elapsed 24-hour blocks. If a holiday is tomorrow, the page says 1 day, whatever the hour.
Where the dates come from
- Fixed-date holidays — Christmas, New Year’s Day, Halloween — never move, so they are computed directly from the calendar.
- Moving holidays — Easter, Thanksgiving, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Lunar New Year — are computed from their defining rules where a rule exists (Easter follows the computus; US Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November), and taken from officially published dates where it does not.
- Seasons — solstices and equinoxes — follow published astronomical dates rather than the “first of the month” convention, so they can shift by a day between years.
How it is kept accurate
Moving dates are reviewed at least once a year and after any official announcement that changes one; the last full review was in August 2026. Every page carries the date it was last updated. When a reader reports an error with a source, the correction ships within days, and the page’s update date changes with it.
The site is an independent project, funded by the display advertising you see on tool pages. Advertising never changes which countdowns are listed or what a page says.
