Most of the holidays on this page never move. Christmas is December 25, Halloween is October 31, New Year’s Day is January 1, and no calendar reform in living memory has touched them. For those, a countdown is arithmetic: the date is known for every year, so the only interesting question is which time zone you are counting in — and that is the question most countdowns get wrong, because they compute on a server somewhere and hand you a number that is up to a day out.
The moving ones are more interesting. Easter is the anchor for a whole chain of dates: Shrove Tuesday is 47 days before it, Ash Wednesday 46, Palm Sunday the week before, Good Friday two days before, Easter Monday the day after. Get Easter right and eleven other pages are right for free; get it wrong and they are all wrong together. That is why Easter is calculated with the computus rather than looked up, and why the years on each page are shown with the weekday they fall on — a Sunday feast landing on a Tuesday is the kind of error you can spot at a glance.
Then there is a third group that looks fixed but is not. Black Friday is always the day after Thanksgiving, which means it moves with Thanksgiving; Cyber Monday is the Monday after that. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are fixed weekday rules rather than dates, and they fall on different days in different countries. Each of those has its own page here, with the rule spelled out rather than assumed.

Why do some holidays move every year and others never do?
A fixed holiday is written into the calendar as a date — Christmas is December 25 whatever else happens. A moving holiday is written as a rule, and the rule points at something that drifts: Easter is tied to the first full moon after the spring equinox, and everything from Shrove Tuesday to Pentecost is measured from Easter.
