How many business days are there between two dates?

The DaysUntilNow business days calculator counts every working day from the first date to the last inclusive, taking out Saturdays, Sundays and the eleven US federal holidays on the days federal offices actually close. Both ends are included, because a range of work is usually described by the first day you work and the last, not by the gaps between them.

Underneath the total it lists the holidays it removed by name and date, so you can see whether the figure matches your own calendar rather than trusting it. If your organisation works through Columbus Day, switch the holiday list off and the count rises accordingly.

The working week is an input too. Monday to Friday is the default, Monday to Saturday and Sunday to Thursday are the other common patterns, and the result also gives working weeks, hours at an eight-hour day and what share of the calendar range is workable. Calculations use US federal holidays; local holidays differ.

A working-day count has two inputs that nobody writes down: which days of the week count as work, and whose holidays apply. Get either wrong and the answer is off by exactly as many days as you were trying to be precise about. Both are switches on this page rather than assumptions buried in the code.

Closed for whom? Banks, markets and the mail differ

There is no single American answer to “is today a business day”, because several different calendars share the name and they disagree. Federal offices and the Federal Reserve follow the eleven federal holidays. Banks broadly follow the Federal Reserve, which is why no ACH transfer or wire settles on a federal holiday. The Postal Service follows it too.

The stock exchanges do not. They keep their own schedule, which overlaps with the federal list but disagrees at both ends: they trade normally on Columbus Day and Veterans Day, and they close on Good Friday, which is not a federal holiday at all. The bond market keeps a third schedule again.

For most deadlines the federal list is the right one, because the question is whether an office, a bank or a court is open. If your deadline is a settlement date, check the market calendar instead.

The eleven US federal holidays, as rules

That federal list is defined as rules, not as dates, which is why any year can be worked out without maintaining a table. Six of the eleven are pinned to a weekday and can never fall on a weekend. The other five are fixed dates, and those are the ones that move when observed.

HolidayThe ruleCan the day off move?
New Year’s DayJanuary 1Yes

Juneteenth National Independence DayJune 19Yes

Labor DayFirst Monday in SeptemberNo

Thanksgiving DayFourth Thursday in NovemberNo
Christmas DayDecember 25Yes

The moving five are why two calendars can disagree about the same year. The legal date never changes; what changes is the day offices close, and that is the day a working-day count has to skip.

Not every working week is Monday to Friday

The Monday-to-Friday week is a convention with real exceptions, and they are not marginal ones. Much of the Gulf and the eastern Mediterranean runs Sunday to Thursday, with Friday and Saturday as the weekend. Retail, hospitality and construction routinely run Monday to Saturday. Switching the working week changes the count and the weekend total together; the holiday list is a separate switch, because the two questions are independent.

What ten business days actually spans

From a weekday start, business days convert to calendar days on a fixed pattern, because five working days always occupy exactly one week.

Every public holiday inside the span adds one more calendar day, and starting on a Saturday or Sunday shortens it, because the counting only begins on the Monday. If you want the date rather than the length, the days from today calculator has business days as a unit and will land you on it directly.

To measure a span you already have both ends of in ordinary calendar days, use days between dates β€” it shows the Monday-to-Friday count alongside the total, without the holiday list. For a project measured in weeks rather than days, weeks between dates gives whole weeks plus the leftover, and for a shift measured to the minute the time duration calculator takes times of day as well as dates.

Frequently asked questions

Is Columbus Day a business day?

It depends who you are asking, and this is the holiday where the answer splits. Columbus Day (Indigenous Peoples’ Day) is one of the 11 US federal holidays, so federal offices, the Federal Reserve, most banks and the Postal Service are closed and no ACH or wire settles that day. The NYSE and Nasdaq trade a full session; only the bond market closes, on the SIFMA-recommended schedule. Veterans Day behaves exactly the same way.

Is Good Friday a business day?

Good Friday is not a US federal holiday, so banks, the Federal Reserve and the Postal Service run normally and ACH settles. The NYSE and Nasdaq close anyway β€” it is the one market holiday that is not a federal one. Some states observe it as a state holiday, so state offices and courts there may close while the bank next door is open.

How many calendar days is 10 business days?

Fourteen, if you start on a weekday and no public holiday falls inside β€” ten Monday-to-Friday days always span exactly two weeks and land on the same weekday you started from. Each public holiday inside the span pushes it out by one more day, so a span crossing Thanksgiving is 15 calendar days and one crossing both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day is 16. Starting on a Saturday or Sunday shortens it to 13 or 12, because the counting starts on the Monday.

Is the working week Monday to Friday everywhere?

No. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Egypt and Israel run a Sunday-to-Thursday week with a Friday-Saturday weekend. The UAE broke ranks on 1 January 2022, moving the public sector to Monday-Friday with a half day on Friday, and much of the private sector followed. If a deadline sits with a counterparty in one of those countries, a Sunday is a working day there and a Friday often is not, so a Monday-to-Friday count will be wrong in both directions.

How we calculate this

Every date from the first day to the last, both included, is tested against two masks. The first is the working week: Monday to Friday by default, with Monday to Saturday, Sunday to Thursday and every-day options for the places and trades that use them. The second is the holiday list, which is computed from the rules in 5 U.S.C. 6103 rather than stored as a table of dates, so any year works: five of the eleven federal holidays are fixed dates and six are weekday rules such as the fourth Thursday in November.

Observance follows 5 U.S.C. 6103(b) and Executive Order 11582 β€” a holiday falling on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before and one falling on a Sunday on the Monday after, and it is the observed date that is skipped, because that is the day the office is shut. A holiday that lands on a day the working week already excludes is not counted twice. The holidays actually removed are listed by name and date under the result, which is the only way to check a working-day figure against your own calendar. Holidays outside the United States are not applied.

Where a working-day count goes wrong

The holiday belongs to the counterparty, not to you. A deadline is met when the other side’s office is open. If the work is being done in one country and received in another, the count that matters uses their weekend and their public holidays, which is what the working-week switch is for.

“Business days” in shipping means the carrier’s calendar. Couriers and marketplaces publish transit times in business days measured against their own operating schedule, which often includes Saturdays for delivery but not for processing. The count here is the office version.

A holiday on a weekend still costs you a day. Under the US observance rule the day off moves to the adjacent weekday, so a Christmas Day that falls on a Saturday closes offices on the Friday β€” a working day that would otherwise have counted.
