How many days are there until Christmas?
The DaysUntilNow Christmas countdown runs to midnight at the start of December 25 on your own clock, so it hits zero the moment Christmas Day begins where you are standing rather than where a server is. The date itself never moves; only the weekday does. The number above is therefore plain calendar arithmetic — whole days between midnights, with the hours, minutes and seconds of the day in progress counted separately beside them.
That is also why two countdown sites can be one apart on the same afternoon. A site printing a whole number is counting calendar dates and has already rounded the current day up or down. A shopping-day figure is a third number again, because retail stops counting at Christmas Eve.

The shopping calendar behind the countdown
A shopping-day count and the clock at the top of this page are two different numbers, and the gap between them is not a rounding error. Retail counting stops at Christmas Eve, because December 25 is not a trading day for the large chains, so the retail figure starts out one lower than the calendar one. Take Sundays out as well, the way department stores originally did, and it drops again.

Neither of the two shopping figures measures opening hours, which is the thing that actually runs out. A shop that shuts at four o’clock on Christmas Eve still counts as a whole shopping day in both columns. The number worth watching for in-store shopping is the count of Saturdays left, which is in the next table down.
The bottom row is the part almost nobody counts: the holiday shopping window itself. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are defined by their distance from Thanksgiving rather than by a date, so the stretch between the two big shopping weekends is a different length every year — which is why some Decembers feel calm and others do not. Every unit of the same wait
Days are the unit everybody asks for and the least useful one for planning. What people are actually working with is weekends — how many Saturdays are left to get into a shop, how many free days there are to cook, wrap and travel — and working days, which is what a delivery promise or a project deadline is measured in.

“Sleeps” is the same number as days, which is why children and calendars never disagree about it: both count the nights that stand between now and the morning. The working-day row skips Saturdays, Sundays and US federal holidays, so treat it as the American figure — a UK office loses different days, and a school year ends earlier than either.

The date is fixed, so the only thing moving in that table is the weekday, and it moves in a pattern worth knowing: forward one day each year, and forward two whenever a leap day has gone by in between. That is the whole reason Christmas cannot simply alternate between weekdays and weekends.
The years worth spotting early are the ones where December 25 lands on a Saturday or a Sunday, because that is when the calendar date and the day off stop being the same thing. The days off that hang off December 25
The countdown counts the calendar date. Which day you are given off is a separate question with a different answer in every country:
- United States. Christmas Day is one of the eleven federal holidays listed in 5 U.S.C. 6103. When it falls on a Saturday, federal offices close on the Friday before; when it falls on a Sunday, they close on the Monday after. The legal date does not move — only the day off does.
- United Kingdom. Christmas Day and Boxing Day are both bank holidays, and when either lands on a weekend a substitute weekday is given instead, which is how a weekend Christmas can produce bank holidays running into December 28.
- Trading law is a third thing again. In England and Wales, large shops may not open at all on Christmas Day under the Christmas Day (Trading) Act 2004, and Scotland has its own act covering both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Small shops are outside it.
- Everywhere else. Public holidays are national law, and plenty of countries treat December 24 as the main day rather than the 25th.

When your Christmas is not on December 25
Plenty of households count down to something a few days either side of the date above — the Julian December 25 that falls on January 7, the Armenian celebration on January 6, a family gathering pinned to whichever weekend everyone can travel, or Christmas Eve itself, which in much of Europe and Latin America is the evening that matters.

Frequently asked questions
How many shopping days until Christmas, and why is that different from the days until Christmas?
A shopping-day count stops at December 24, because effectively no large retailer trades on Christmas Day — in England and Wales shops over 280 square metres are legally barred from opening by the Christmas Day (Trading) Act 2004. That is why a shopping-day figure is normally one lower than the plain days-until figure, and lower still on counts that also drop Sundays. Neither number measures store hours: a shop that closes at 4 pm on Christmas Eve still counts as a full shopping day, so the useful figure for in-store shopping is how many Saturdays are left, not how many days.
Does the days until Christmas count include today and Christmas Day itself?
Neither, when the countdown is a live clock: it measures the time from this second to midnight at the start of December 25, so at breakfast on December 24 it reads 0 days and about 15 hours, not “1 day”. Sites that print a whole number are counting calendar dates instead, and they differ by one depending on whether they treat today as day one. “Sleeps” is the same figure counted in nights, so ten days left is ten more sleeps.
Is Christmas Eve a federal holiday in the United States?
No. Only December 25 is a legal public holiday under 5 U.S.C. 6103; December 24 is an ordinary working day unless the president closes federal offices for that year by executive order. That has happened repeatedly but unpredictably — Christmas Eve was granted this way in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2024 — so it is decided in December, not in law. Private employers are never bound by it either way.
Why does Advent start on a different date than my advent calendar?
Advent Sunday is the fourth Sunday before Christmas, so it moves with the weekday Christmas falls on and can land anywhere between November 27 and December 3. Commercial advent calendars ignore that: they have 24 doors, always start on December 1 and always end on Christmas Eve. The two only coincide in years when December 1 happens to be that fourth Sunday; in the other years the calendar starts a few days after the church season has begun.
Why do some churches celebrate Christmas on January 7?
Because they keep December 25 on the Julian calendar, which currently runs thirteen days behind the Gregorian one — so their December 25 is our January 7. The Russian, Serbian, Georgian and Jerusalem churches are the main ones that still do. Several other Orthodox churches, including the Greek, Romanian and Bulgarian, moved fixed feasts onto the revised Julian calendar and keep Christmas on December 25 with everyone else, and the Orthodox Church of Ukraine joined them in 2023. The Armenian Apostolic Church is a separate case again: it never split Christmas from Epiphany and celebrates on January 6.
Is Boxing Day a public holiday outside the United Kingdom?
In much of the Commonwealth, yes. December 26 is a public holiday in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and in Ireland it is kept as St Stephen’s Day. It is not a federal holiday in the United States, where December 26 is an ordinary working day unless it happens to be the observed day for Christmas. Where the 26th falls on a weekend, the countries that keep it usually move the day off to the following Monday or Tuesday, so a Christmas on a Friday can produce a four-day stretch in London and a three-day one in Sydney.

The counter is the only figure on this page computed in your browser: it reads your device clock, works out midnight at the start of the next December 25 in your own time zone, and recounts the gap every second. Nothing is sent anywhere and nothing is stored.
Every table is computed when the site is built, by walking the calendar day by day from the build date printed in the caption — never from a list of dates typed into the page. The shopping table uses two conventions on purpose: all days to Christmas Eve, which is what most countdowns mean today, and the same count with Sundays removed, which is the original department-store figure from the days when shops were shut on Sundays. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are derived from the fourth Thursday in November rather than stored, so they cannot drift.
Working-day counts skip Saturdays, Sundays and US federal holidays, including the observed-day rule. Holidays elsewhere differ; read those rows as American unless the page says otherwise.

Good to know before you plan around the date
The weekday is what decides your Christmas, not the date. A Christmas on a Wednesday costs most people two days of leave to bridge; a Christmas on a Saturday means the day off lands somewhere else entirely, and in the United States it lands on the Friday before.
Deliveries run out before the shops do. Carrier deadlines for ordinary post are published each year and cluster in the third week of December, well before the last shopping day the table below counts. If a parcel has to arrive, count to the deadline rather than to the 25th — that is exactly what the countdown you build yourself is for.
The reminder is the useful half. Nobody forgets Christmas; people forget the last posting day, the school concert and the deadline for ordering a turkey. Set the email for seven days out and the date arrives with a week still in hand.
