A date that is calculated, not remembered

Ask when Thanksgiving is and almost everybody answers with a weekday rather than a date, which is the correct answer and also the reason the countdown exists. The holiday is defined as the fourth Thursday in November, so its date is recalculated every year and lands somewhere inside a seven-day band.

That has a small practical consequence for any list, diary or spreadsheet you keep. A fixed date can be typed once; a rule-based date has to be worked out again each year, and typing last year’s date into next year’s plan is the single most common Thanksgiving mistake in a shared calendar.

Everything commercial in the American autumn is built on top of that Thursday. Retail runs on it, airlines schedule around it, and the length of the Christmas shopping season is decided by where it happens to fall — which is why the Christmas countdown carries a shopping table that counts the window from this date rather than from December 1.

Ten Thanksgivings, and the Canadian date beside them

Every date in that table is walked out of the calendar at build time from its own rule, so the two columns can be compared honestly: an American Thursday in late November against a Canadian Monday in the second week of October. The Canadian date has a quiet second identity — it is the same day as Columbus Day, the American federal holiday, so a Monday that is a working day for most of the United States is a holiday for its neighbour.

The weekend column earns its place for a different reason here than on the fixed-date countdowns. Thanksgiving can never fall on a weekend, so the answer is always no; what the table is really telling you is which years put the holiday early in the month, and those are the years when the run to Christmas is at its longest.

The five days that travel with it

The countdown at the top of this page counts to one Thursday, but almost nobody is planning a single day. What the date actually starts is a five-day stretch, and each part of it has its own rules:

• Thursday. The federal holiday itself, and the only day of the five with any legal standing.
• Friday. Not a federal holiday, though most state governments and many private employers close. Retail treats it as the biggest trading day of the year under the name Black Friday.
• Saturday. Small Business Saturday, a marketing campaign started in 2010 and now widely kept, aimed squarely at the day between the two big shopping events.
• Sunday. The return leg, and repeatedly the busiest day in the history of American aviation.
• Monday. Cyber Monday, which is the only part of the stretch that can spill into December.

Read all five as American. Nothing in that list is a public holiday outside the United States, and the working-day counts elsewhere on this site skip US federal holidays by default.

Travel: the busiest days are not the holiday

Air travel around Thanksgiving is a two-humped shape, and the holiday sits in the trough. The outbound peak is the Tuesday and Wednesday before, the return peak is the Sunday after, and the Thursday itself is one of the quietest flying days of the season.

The same is true on the roads for a different reason: everybody is trying to arrive by dinner, so Wednesday afternoon and evening carry the load. Counting to Thanksgiving and counting to the day you actually have to leave are two different countdowns, usually a day apart.

The other harvest thanksgivings

Thanksgiving reads as an American holiday, and Canada’s October version is well known, but a handful of other countries keep a thanksgiving of their own on entirely different dates:

• Liberia — the first Thursday in November, a national holiday inherited from nineteenth-century American settlers, so it keeps the Thursday but not the week.
• Grenada — October 25, a fixed date and a much younger holiday, marking the events of 1983.
• Norfolk Island — the last Wednesday in November, brought over by visiting American whalers in the nineteenth century.

Germany, Japan and several other countries keep harvest or labour thanksgiving days that share the idea and none of the calendar, which is a useful reminder that a countdown site’s “next holiday” is always somebody’s local question.
