How many days are there between two dates?

The DaysUntilNow days-between calculator counts whole calendar days from one midnight to the next, so 1 June to 5 June is four days. Switch the end day on and the same span reads five, because you are then counting the dated days themselves rather than the gaps between them.

Both numbers are correct and they answer different questions. Hotels, car hire and interest are charged on the gaps. Visa stays, prison sentences and school attendance count the dated days. Court deadlines usually do a third thing again and drop the day the clock started.

The result also breaks the span into whole weeks and leftover days, into months and days, and into working days and weekend days, because that is reliably the next thing anyone asks. Nothing is sent anywhere: the arithmetic runs in your browser, against your own calendar, and both dates travel in the link.

Ask two people how many days there are between 1 June and 5 June and you will get two answers, each defended with total confidence. The disagreement is not about arithmetic. One person is counting the spaces between the dates and the other is counting the dates, and every off-by-one argument about deadlines, hotel bills, visa stays and notice periods is a version of that same split.

Two counts, one calendar

SpanGaps between the datesDated days touched
1 June to 2 June12
1 June to 5 June45
1 June to 30 June2930
1 June to 1 July3031

The right-hand column is always exactly one higher, which is the whole of the problem. There is no third possibility and no ambiguity once you know which column you are in β€” the trouble is that calculators, contracts and booking systems rarely say.

Which count does your situation want?

Nights, hire and interest: the gaps. Anything billed per night or accruing per day is charging for the intervals, so a Friday-to-Sunday stay is two nights. This is the default here.

Stays, sentences and attendance: the dated days. If the question is “how many days were you present”, every date you touched counts, including the day you arrived and the day you left. Switch the end day on.

Court and administrative deadlines: usually neither, quite. The common rule excludes the day of the triggering event and includes the last day, then rolls the last day forward if it lands on a weekend or a holiday. That is the gap count with a rollover on the end, and it is worth reading the rule that governs your case rather than assuming.

Payroll and notice periods: read the contract. A month’s notice and thirty days’ notice are the same length in only four months of the year β€” the ones that have thirty days in them β€” and whether the notice day itself counts is a term of the agreement, not a property of the calendar.

What comes with the number

The headline is the span in days; the lines under it are the questions people ask about thirty seconds later.

Whole weeks and leftover days turns a figure like 100 into something you can picture on a wall planner. If you would rather have that as the headline, the weeks between dates calculator leads with it.

Months and days is walked out of the real calendar rather than divided by an average month, so it never claims a span is 1.97 months.

Working days and weekend days splits the span the way a project plan does. It counts Monday to Friday only; for a count that also drops public holidays, use the business days calculator.

Hours and decimal weeks are there for spreadsheets, timesheets and anything that wants a number rather than a phrase. For a span that includes times of day rather than whole dates, the time duration calculator goes down to the minute.

If you would rather start from one date and a length of time β€” thirty days from now, six weeks before the deadline β€” that is the days from today calculator, and if the far end of the span is somebody’s birthday, age in days counts it in the units people actually celebrate.

Frequently asked questions

Do both the arrival day and the departure day count toward the Schengen 90 days?

Yes. Under the Schengen Borders Code the date of entry counts as the first day of stay and the date of exit as the last, whatever time of day you cross the border. Arriving on 1 March and leaving on 5 March is five days of stay, not four. That is the inclusive count β€” the plain gap between the two dates is four, which is why travellers who use an ordinary date calculator under-report by one day per trip.

When a court says "within 30 days", does the day I was served count?

No. Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 6(a) excludes the day of the triggering event, counts every day in between including Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays, and includes the last day. If that last day is a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, the period runs to the end of the next day that is not. Served on a Monday, day one is the Tuesday. Most state rules copy the same wording, but the rule that governs your case is the one to check.

Why does a hotel booking show 5 nights but 6 days?

A night is a gap between two dates; a day is a date on the calendar. A stay from the 1st to the 6th is five nights and touches six dated days, and hotels and car rentals bill the gaps, so you pay for five. Counting nights is the exclusive count, counting the dated days you are present is the inclusive count, and it is always exactly one higher.

Why is the gap between the same two dates one day longer than it was last year?

Because a 29 February fell inside the span. A leap day is an ordinary calendar day and is counted like any other, so 1 February to 1 March is 28 days in 2027 and 29 days in 2028. For the same reason “a year” between two dates is 365 days most of the time and 366 whenever the span contains a 29 February.

How we calculate this

Both dates are held as UTC midnights and the answer is the difference between them in whole days. That is deliberate: a local midnight is not always 24 hours from the next one, so a count anchored to local time comes out one short or one long for half the world on the two days a year the clocks change. The end-day switch adds exactly one to the total and changes nothing else.

The supporting lines are computed from the same span rather than converted from the headline number. Whole weeks are the total divided by seven with the remainder shown as days. Months are walked out of the calendar one at a time until the next step would overshoot, so a span is described as “two months and three days” rather than divided by an average month that does not exist. Working days count Monday to Friday and do not skip public holidays β€” the business days calculator does that, with a holiday list you can switch off. Reversing the dates gives the same magnitude with a note that the span was counted backwards.
