When exactly is All Saints' Day?
All Saints’ Day on 1 November honours all saints, known and unknown, and is followed on 2 November by All Souls’ Day for the wider dead. Halloween takes its name from the evening before it — All Hallows’ Eve.
It is a public holiday across much of Catholic Europe and Latin America, and in practice it is the day for visiting cemeteries: families clean graves and light candles, which is why photographs of Polish, Slovak and Hungarian cemeteries on that night show whole hillsides glowing. In Mexico the same two days are Día de Muertos.
