When exactly is Earth Day?
Earth Day has been held on 22 April since 1970, when an estimated 20 million Americans — about a tenth of the country’s population at the time — turned out for demonstrations that helped push through the Clean Air Act and the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency.
It went international in 1990 and is now marked in around 190 countries. The date was chosen deliberately: late April falls between spring break and final exams in the US academic calendar, which is when students were most available to take part.
