When exactly is Eid al-Fitr?
Eid al-Fitr — the Festival of Breaking the Fast — marks the end of Ramadan and begins on the first day of Shawwal, the tenth Islamic month. It is one of the two major Islamic festivals, alongside Eid al-Adha.
The day starts with a communal morning prayer, usually held outdoors or in large halls to fit everyone, followed by visiting family, giving gifts to children and eating in daylight for the first time in a month. A charitable payment called zakat al-fitr is due before the prayer, so that everyone can take part in the meal.
