When exactly is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth marks 19 June 1865, the day Union troops reached Galveston, Texas and announced that enslaved people there were free — two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect, and over two months after the Confederate surrender.
It had been celebrated in Texas since 1866 and spread with the Great Migration, but only became a US federal holiday in June 2021. The name is a blend of “June” and “nineteenth”, and it is also called Freedom Day or Emancipation Day.

Why did news of emancipation take so long to reach Texas?
The Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 only applied to Confederate territory and could not be enforced where the Union had no troops. Texas was the most remote Confederate state with little fighting on its soil, so enslavers there continued as before until Union forces actually arrived in June 1865.
