When exactly is Labor Day (US)?
Labor Day is a US federal holiday held on the first Monday in September, honouring the American labour movement. It became federal law in 1894, signed days after the violent end of the Pullman strike โ a conciliatory gesture towards organised labour from President Grover Cleveland.
Culturally it functions as the unofficial end of summer: the last long weekend before the school year settles in, the traditional close of the outdoor pool season, and the origin of the old rule against wearing white afterwards. Canada marks Labour Day on the same day.

Frequently asked questions
When is Labor Day (US)?
Labor Day falls on the first Monday in September.
Why is US Labor Day in September and not on 1 May like most countries?
The September date predates the international one and was kept deliberately. Some US cities had held September labour parades since 1882, and after the Haymarket affair of 1886 made 1 May politically charged, the federal government promoted September as the safer alternative. It became law in 1894.
