Labor Day is a US federal holiday held on the first Monday in September, honouring the American labour movement. It became federal law in 1894, signed days after the violent end of the Pullman strike — a conciliatory gesture towards organised labour from President Grover Cleveland.
Culturally it functions as the unofficial end of summer: the last long weekend before the school year settles in, the traditional close of the outdoor pool season, and the origin of the old rule against wearing white afterwards. Canada marks Labour Day on the same day.
