When exactly is May Day?
1 May carries two traditions at once. The older is the spring festival marking the halfway point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice, kept alive in maypole dancing and Beltane fires. The newer is International Workers’ Day, chosen in 1889 to commemorate the Haymarket affair in Chicago three years earlier.
It is a public holiday in more than 80 countries — most of Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia. The United States is a notable exception: despite the day commemorating an American event, it marks Labor Day in September instead.

Why does the United States not celebrate May Day when it commemorates a Chicago event?
That is precisely why. After the Haymarket affair of 1886, the date became closely associated with anarchist and socialist movements, and the US government promoted the existing September Labor Day as a deliberate alternative. President Grover Cleveland made September official in 1894, and the split has held ever since.
