When exactly is Memorial Day?
Memorial Day honours US military personnel who died in service. It is held on the last Monday in May, a date fixed by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 — before that it was always 30 May, and some veterans’ groups still argue the move to a floating Monday turned a day of remembrance into a shopping weekend.
It began after the Civil War as Decoration Day, when graves were decorated with flowers. Like Labor Day at the other end of the season, it now doubles as a seasonal marker: the unofficial start of the American summer.
