When exactly is Palm Sunday?
Palm Sunday is the Sunday before Easter and the first day of Holy Week, marking the entry into Jerusalem when crowds are described as laying palm branches on the road.
Congregations are given palm crosses or fronds, which many keep through the year — and which are then burned to make the ashes for the following year’s Ash Wednesday. Where palms do not grow, local substitutes took hold long ago: willow in much of Eastern Europe, box and yew elsewhere, which is why the day is called Willow Sunday in several Slavic countries.
