When exactly is The Perseids?

The Perseid meteor shower peaks on the night of August 12–13 each year. The live counter above shows exactly how many days, hours, minutes and seconds remain until the next one, worked out in your own time zone.

The Perseids peak on the night of August 12–13, when Earth crosses the densest part of the dust trail left by comet Swift–Tuttle. At the maximum a dark site sees 50 to 100 meteors an hour, which makes it the most watched shower of the year in the northern hemisphere — warm nights help as much as the rate does.

The shower is active from mid-July to late August, so the days either side of the peak are still worth going out for. What decides the year is the moon: a full moon near the peak washes out all but the brightest trails.

Frequently asked questions

When is The Perseids?

The Perseid meteor shower peaks on the night of August 12–13 each year.

What time of night is best for watching the Perseids?

After midnight and before dawn, when your side of the planet is turned into the debris stream. Look about halfway up the sky rather than straight at the radiant in Perseus — meteors near the radiant appear short, and the long trails come from further out.
