When exactly is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and a month of fasting from dawn to sunset for around 1.9 billion Muslims worldwide. It ends with Eid al-Fitr.
The Islamic calendar is lunar and about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, so Ramadan moves steadily backwards through the seasons, completing a full cycle roughly every 33 years. That is why the length of the fasting day varies so much: a Ramadan falling in December is far shorter for northern-hemisphere Muslims than one falling in June.
