When exactly is Republic Day (India)?
Republic Day marks 26 January 1950, when the Constitution of India came into force and the country became a republic — two and a half years after independence in 1947.
The date was chosen deliberately: on 26 January 1930 the Indian National Congress had declared Purna Swaraj, complete independence, and the day had been marked ever since. It is one of India’s three national holidays, alongside Independence Day on 15 August and Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October, and is marked by a large parade in New Delhi.
