When exactly is Shrove Tuesday?
Shrove Tuesday is the last day before Lent, and it exists for a practical reason: eggs, milk and fat were forbidden during the fast, so households used them up. That is the whole origin of Pancake Day.
The same day carries different names and very different scales elsewhere — Mardi Gras in New Orleans and much of the French-speaking world, Carnival in Brazil, Fastnacht in Germany, and Fastelavn in Scandinavia. In 2028 it falls on 29 February, which happens only a handful of times a century.
