How often does Friday the 13th happen?

The DaysUntilNow Friday the 13th finder walks the calendar and tests all twelve thirteenths of the year, so every date it gives you is counted rather than remembered. Every Gregorian year contains at least one and never more than three, and which of those you get is settled by two facts alone: the weekday 1 January falls on, and whether the year is a leap year.

A fourth is arithmetically impossible. The twelve thirteenths of a year spread themselves across the seven weekdays in a pattern fixed by the month lengths, and no single weekday can collect more than three of them.

The finder also reports the next one from today, however far into the future that is, and how many days away it stands β€” so the year field is a curiosity and the top line is the practical answer.

Where the superstition came from

The two halves have long histories on their own and a short history together. Thirteen has been treated as an unlucky number for centuries, usually explained by the thirteen at the Last Supper; Friday carried its own weight in Christian Europe as the day of the Crucifixion. What is hard to find is any evidence that anyone combined them before the 19th century β€” folklorists looking for an older written trace keep coming back empty-handed.

The earliest widely cited appearance in English is a note in a biography of Rossini, who died on Friday 13 November 1868, remarking on the coincidence of the unlucky day and the unlucky number. In 1907 the Boston stockbroker Thomas W. Lawson published a novel called Friday, the Thirteenth, in which a trader brings down Wall Street by exploiting the superstition, and the date entered popular culture properly. The film series of 1980 onwards did the rest.

The story you may have heard about the Knights Templar is half true and half modern. The mass arrests really did take place on Friday 13 October 1307. The claim that the date became unlucky because of them appears nowhere until the 20th century, which is several hundred years too late to be the cause of anything.

What the evidence actually shows

The best-known study is a one-page paper in the British Medical Journal in 1993 with the title Is Friday the 13th bad for your health? It compared traffic flow and hospital admissions on Friday the 13th with the Friday the 6th before it, and found fewer vehicles on the road but more admissions from road accidents. The authors were careful to say the sample was small and the effect might be behavioural rather than supernatural, and later work has not reliably reproduced it.

Pointing the other way, the Dutch Centre for Insurance Statistics reported in 2008 that Dutch insurers saw fewer accidents, fires and thefts on Friday the 13th than on other Fridays, offering the same explanation from the opposite side: people who believe the date is dangerous behave more carefully, or stay at home.

The honest summary is that the date changes what people do, not what happens to them. That alone is enough to move prices: airlines and hotels have historically seen softer demand on the date, which is why it turns up in lists of cheap days to fly.

Read the last column before you plan anything around it: a year with three is not unusual enough to be worth remarking on, and the months they land in shift every year because the count depends on the weekday January 1 falls on and on whether February has 29 days.

The number that quietly goes missing

Once a date is treated as unlucky, the number vanishes from the built environment, and this is where the superstition costs real money.

Buildings. Lift manufacturers have said for decades that a large majority of the tall buildings they equip have no floor labelled 13 β€” the button goes from 12 to 14, and the storey exists regardless.

Aircraft. Several European carriers omit row 13 from their seat maps, and Lufthansa omits both 13 and 17 β€” the second because seventeen is the unlucky number in Italy.

Hospitals and hotels. Room 13 is frequently missing for the same reason, on the practical grounds that a room nobody wants is a room that cannot be sold.

None of this changes the calendar. The 13th of the month arrives whether or not the floor above the 12th is called 13, and the finder above will tell you exactly when.

Frequently asked questions

Can a year go by without a Friday the 13th?

No. Every Gregorian year has at least one Friday the 13th and never more than three. Across the years 1583-2200 there are 265 years with exactly one, 261 with two and 92 with three, an average of 1.72 per year. Four is impossible: the twelve 13ths of a year spread across the seven weekdays in such a way that no single weekday can collect more than three of them.

Is it true that three Friday the 13ths only happen in a year starting on a Thursday?

There are two patterns, not one. A common year starting on a Thursday has them in February, March and November (2026, 2037, 2043, 2054), and a leap year starting on a Sunday has them in January, April and July (2040, 2068, 2096). Of the 92 three-occurrence years between 1583 and 2200, 68 are the Thursday-start type and 24 the leap Sunday-start type. After 2026 the next ones are 2037, 2040 and 2043.

When do two Friday the 13ths happen in consecutive months, and why only February and March?

Only February and March can do it, and only in a common year: February then has exactly 28 days, four whole weeks, so 13 March falls on the same weekday as 13 February. It happens in every common year that begins on a Thursday - this century 2026, 2037, 2043, 2054, 2065, 2071, 2082, 2093 and 2099, roughly eleven times per hundred years. In a leap year February has 29 days, which shifts March by one weekday and makes the pair impossible.

What is the longest possible stretch without a Friday the 13th?

Fourteen months, or 427 days - for example from 13 July 2001 to 13 September 2002, and next from 13 August 2027 to 13 October 2028. The shortest possible gap is 28 days, February to March in a common year. Over a full 400-year Gregorian cycle the 13th falls on a Friday 688 times, more often than on any other weekday (Sunday and Wednesday 687, Monday and Tuesday 685, Thursday and Saturday 684).

How we calculate this

The finder takes the year you give it, builds the 13th of each of the twelve months as a UTC date, reads the weekday off each one and keeps the Fridays. There is no table of dates anywhere in it, which is why it answers for any year the field accepts β€” 1583, the first full year of the Gregorian calendar, to 2200.

The “next one from today” line is found the same way: it scans forward from today’s date, year by year, until it hits a match, and then measures the gap in whole calendar days counted from midnight to midnight in your own time zone.

Before 1583 the question has no single answer, because the Gregorian calendar had not been adopted β€” and different countries adopted it decades or centuries apart, so the same historical Friday was the 13th in one country and not in another.

Elsewhere the unlucky date is a different one

Spain, Greece and much of Latin America fear Tuesday the 13th. Martes trece carries the same weight there that Friday does in English-speaking countries, and the proverb warns against marrying, travelling or leaving home on it.

Italy fears Friday the 17th. Thirteen is generally a lucky number there; seventeen is the problem, because the Roman numeral XVII rearranges into VIXI β€” “I have lived”, and therefore no longer do.
