When does each season begin?

DaysUntilNow answers this twice, because the question has two answers: the astronomical start, computed from the Earth’s position on its orbit, and the meteorological start, which is simply the first of a month. The astronomical seasons begin at an equinox or a solstice β€” a single instant for the whole planet, which lands on a date that wanders by a day or two from year to year.

The meteorological seasons begin on 1 March, 1 June, 1 September and 1 December in the northern hemisphere, six months apart from that in the southern. Weather services use them because you cannot average a season that starts at a different hour every year.

The hemisphere switch is not decoration. The same four instants serve both halves of the planet with the names exchanged: the December solstice starts northern winter and southern summer at the very same second.

The practical consequence is that a forecaster and a calendar publisher can announce the first day of spring nine days apart and both be telling the truth.

What an equinox is not

The word promises equal night, and the day of the equinox does not deliver it. On the equinox itself daylight is a few minutes longer than darkness everywhere except the poles, for two reasons that have nothing to do with the orbit: sunrise and sunset are timed from the first and last sliver of the Sun’s disc rather than its centre, and the atmosphere refracts the image of the Sun so that it is visible while it is still geometrically below the horizon.

The date of genuinely equal day and night β€” the equilux β€” therefore falls a few days before the March equinox and a few days after the September one, and it depends on your latitude, which the equinox does not. That is the whole point of the equinox as a definition: it is one moment for everyone.

The season and the weather are not in step

Midsummer sits at the start of the meteorological summer, not in the middle of it, and the hottest weeks usually arrive several weeks after the longest day. Land and especially ocean keep absorbing heat while the days are still long, so the temperature peak lags the light peak β€” the same reason the coldest weeks come well after the December solstice, and the reason a coastal town lags further behind than an inland one.

This lag is exactly why meteorologists refused to inherit the astronomical dates. A climate record needs blocks that begin on the same day every year and line up with how the atmosphere actually behaves, and whole months do both.

Where the choice actually matters

Reading a forecast or a climate story. “The warmest spring on record” almost always means March to May, not the astronomical season.

Anything scheduled in the southern hemisphere. June is midwinter for a tenth of the planet, and a seasonal campaign, a school term or a sports calendar written from a northern desk will be exactly half a year out.

Gardening and frost dates. Neither definition helps much: the last frost is a local statistic, and it can arrive weeks after the calendar says spring began.

Frequently asked questions

Are the four seasons the same length?

No. Measured from one equinox or solstice instant to the next, the northern seasons in 2026 run: spring 92.7 days, summer 93.6, autumn 89.9 and winter 89.0 - summer is about 4.7 days longer than winter. Earth moves fastest near perihelion in early January, which falls inside northern winter, so that season is crossed most quickly. The southern hemisphere uses the same instants with the names swapped, so there it is winter that is the long season.

Why does my calendar say the equinox is a day earlier than the news does?

An equinox or solstice is a single instant for the whole planet; only the local date differs. The September 2026 equinox falls at 00:06 UTC on 23 September, which is still 20:06 on 22 September in New York - both dates are correct. The calendar date also drifts from year to year: between 2000 and 2100 the March equinox lands on 19 March (UTC) in 20 years, on 20 March in 79 and on 21 March in only 2.

Do the southern hemisphere seasons start on different dates?

Astronomically, no - the same four instants serve both hemispheres, only the names swap: the December solstice starts northern winter and southern summer at the very same moment. Meteorologically, yes: the month blocks are shifted by half a year, so southern summer runs 1 December to 28/29 February while northern summer runs 1 June to 31 August. Forecasters use whole months because seasonal averages cannot be compared when the season starts at a different hour each year.

Is the first day of summer always the longest day of the year?

In the northern hemisphere the June solstice is the longest day, but it is not the day of the earliest sunrise or the latest sunset - those fall a few days before and after it, because the solar day is not exactly 24 hours around the solstice. The date itself moves: between 2000 and 2100 the June solstice falls on 20 June in 46 years and on 21 June in 55. The earliest one of the century is 20 June 2096 at 06:33 UTC, after which the missing leap day in 2100 pushes the dates back again.

How we calculate this

The equinox and solstice instants come from the periodic-terms method in Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms, chapter 27: a mean expression for the instant, corrected by twenty-four periodic terms and scaled by the eccentricity of the Earth’s orbit. It is accurate to well under a minute for the years this page covers, which is far finer than anyone reads a season date at.

The result is produced in Universal Time and then labelled with your own local date, because the instant is global and the date is not. The difference between Terrestrial and Universal Time in this era is about a minute and is not applied.

Meteorological starts need no astronomy at all: they are the first day of March, June, September and December, shifted by six months for the southern hemisphere. Season length is measured from one instant to the next rather than assumed to be a quarter of a year.
