How do you work out the duration between two date and time stamps?

The DaysUntilNow time duration calculator subtracts one date-and-time stamp from the other and reports the gap as days, hours and minutes — a 09:00 start and a 17:30 finish on the same day is 8 hours 30 minutes. The two stamps are read as clock times where you are; nothing is converted between zones, because a duration is the same length whoever measures it.

Crossing midnight needs no special handling here. Put the finish on the following date and 22:00 to 06:00 comes back as 8 hours, not as a negative number or an error, which is how most spreadsheets answer the same question.

Under the headline the same span appears as decimal hours for a timesheet, as total minutes, as total seconds, as days and weeks, and as eight-hour shifts. Reverse the two stamps and you get the same magnitude with a note that you measured backwards.

A duration looks like the simplest thing on this site and is the one people most often get wrong, because a span between two clock times is not the same as the number the schedule promised. Breaks come out of it, midnight runs through the middle of it, and twice a year one of the hours does not exist.

Why a span rarely equals what the schedule says

The unpaid break. A shift written as eight hours is usually eight and a half on the clock, because the meal period sits inside the span and outside the pay. The calculator gives you elapsed time; the break comes off afterwards, and it comes off the same way every day, which makes it easy to forget when reconciling a month.

The clocks changing. On the spring-forward day one hour does not exist and on the fall-back day one hour happens twice. A span that crosses the switch is genuinely 23 or 25 hours long even though both wall-clock stamps look ordinary. Overnight shifts are where this bites, and it bites in the direction of the employee twice a year in opposite ways.

Rounding at both ends. Clock-in systems round, people round, and a span measured from two rounded stamps carries both errors. If the total matters, take the raw stamps and let the arithmetic round once, at the end.

Minutes into decimal hours

Once the span is settled, the last step is usually turning it into the decimal a timesheet, an invoice or a payroll system will accept — and that is where a quarter of an hour quietly becomes a tenth.

The six-minute row is why legal and consulting time is billed in tenths: six minutes is exactly 0.1 of an hour, so a six-minute unit needs no rounding at all. The fifteen-minute row is why everyone else bills in quarters. Anything else — a 20-minute call, a 50-minute lesson — produces a recurring decimal and a rounding policy, which is a thing worth agreeing in advance rather than discovering on an invoice.

Timing something that is still running

The same tool answers “how long has this been going on” if you put the start in and leave the finish at now: an outage, a bake, a race, a flight delay, a fermentation, a build. The seconds line is the useful one for short spans, the shifts line for long ones — a 76-hour incident is easier to describe as nine and a half working days than as three days and four hours.

For spans measured in whole dates rather than moments, days between dates is the quicker route, and it reports the same span in hours if you want the crossover. The seconds line, and what it does not know

The total in seconds is exact arithmetic on a calendar that defines every day as 86,400 seconds. Real civil time has not always agreed: a handful of days since 1972 have had one second more, inserted to keep clocks in step with the rotation of the Earth. No ordinary calculator, spreadsheet or browser represents them, and for everything short of satellite navigation and timestamped trading that is the right simplification — but it is a simplification, and it is worth knowing which one you are using before quoting a seconds figure in an audit.

For anything measured in days rather than seconds, weeks between dates and age in days do the long end of the same arithmetic, and days from today works forwards from a start you already have.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the day the clocks change — 23 hours or 25?

23 hours on the spring-forward day and 25 on the fall-back day, measured as real elapsed time between the same wall-clock times. A night shift booked 22:00 to 06:00 is therefore seven hours of actual time in March and nine hours in November in the US, and the FLSA requires pay for hours actually worked rather than the eight the schedule shows. Any duration computed from two local timestamps that straddle the switch inherits the same missing or extra hour.

Do leap seconds count in a "seconds between two dates" figure?

Not in any ordinary calculator. 27 leap seconds have been inserted into UTC since 1972, the last on 31 December 2016 at 23:59:60, but civil date arithmetic — including the date handling in every browser — treats each day as exactly 86,400 seconds, so a “seconds between” total is always a clean multiple of that. The difference matters only to astronomy, satellite navigation and timestamped trading. It also stops growing: the CGPM voted in November 2022 to discontinue leap seconds by 2035.

Why does my timesheet show 8.5 hours when I am paid for 8?

Because the clock-to-clock span includes the meal break. Under the FLSA a bona fide meal period — normally 30 minutes or more with the employee relieved of all duty — is unpaid and is not hours worked, while short rest breaks of roughly 5 to 20 minutes must be paid. A 09:00 to 17:30 span is 8 hours 30 minutes of elapsed time and 8 hours of paid work once the unpaid half-hour is taken out.

Does a shift that ends after midnight count as one day or two?

For elapsed time it is one unbroken duration: 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours whichever side of midnight the dates fall. For overtime, the FLSA counts a fixed, recurring 168-hour workweek rather than calendar days, so the hours land in whichever workweek the employer has defined. A few states, California and Alaska among them, add daily overtime after 8 hours in a day, and there the split across midnight does change the answer.

How we calculate this

Each side is a calendar date plus a time of day, held as a UTC midnight with the minutes of the clock time added to it. The answer is the difference between the two, expressed as whole days, whole hours and whole minutes, and the same difference divided out into hours, minutes, seconds, days, weeks and eight-hour shifts. Decimal figures are rounded for display, never for the next line: every derived figure comes from the same underlying millisecond count rather than from a rounded one, so the decimal hours and the total minutes cannot disagree.

The two stamps are treated as wall-clock times in the same place. No time zone conversion is applied and no daylight saving correction is made, which is the right behaviour for a shift, a booking or a process measured on one clock, and the wrong behaviour for two events in different zones — for those, convert to a common zone first. A civil day is treated as exactly 86,400 seconds, as it is in every browser and spreadsheet; leap seconds are not represented.
