What percentage of the year has passed?
The DaysUntilNow year progress tool measures the elapsed part of a period in whole days from its first midnight, so a percentage here is a count you can check rather than a feeling. The default is the calendar year; the switch also measures the quarter, the month and the ISO week.
One day is 0.274 per cent of a common year, which means a single percentage point covers 3.65 days. Precision beyond one decimal place is therefore theatre β the second decimal changes every four hours and tells you nothing you did not already know.
Under the bar are the days gone, the days left, the weeks and months remaining, and the same figure drawn as twenty blocks, which is how most people actually read a year: not as 62.7 per cent, but as thirteen blocks filled and seven empty.
Year progress is the rare number whose usefulness has nothing to do with its accuracy. Nobody plans around 62.7 per cent. What the figure does is convert a vague sense of “where has the year gone” into something checkable, which is why it turns up on wall displays, in status channels and at the top of quarterly reviews.
The milestones as dates
The round percentages do not land on the tidy dates people assume. Every date below is the day during which the milestone passes, computed for a common year and for a leap year.

The quarter mark is the one that surprises people: it arrives after the first calendar quarter has already closed, because Q1 is 90 days and a quarter of 365 is 91.25. In a common year the year is still only 24.7 per cent gone on the evening of 31 March. Every comparison between “we are a quarter into the year” and “we have closed Q1” carries that gap.
What a percentage point is worth
One day is 0.274 per cent in a common year and 0.273 in a leap year. That is the smallest step the number can take.
One percentage point is 3.65 days, so a bar that has moved a point since you last looked has moved most of a working week.
A week is 1.92 per cent. Fifty-two of them, plus the odd day, is the whole thing.
A month is between 7.7 and 8.5 per cent, which is the reason monthly targets built on a flat 8.33 per cent quietly overstate February and understate the long months.
The same bar, three shorter periods
The year is the headline, and it is usually the least actionable of the four periods the switch offers.
The quarter is the period most work is actually measured in, and it is the one where the percentage moves fast enough to matter β a day is 1.1 per cent of a 92-day quarter.
The month is where invoices, rent and salaries live, and where the swing between a 28-day and a 31-day period is at its most misleading.
The week is the only one of the four that is exactly the same length every time, which makes it the only one where a percentage and a weekday mean precisely the same thing.
Reading it without fooling yourself
A progress bar tells you where you are, not whether you are behind. Those are different questions, and the bar is silent on the second one unless the work is genuinely spread evenly across the calendar, which almost nothing is.
Two honest uses. As a check-in: a fixed point in the year β the day it passes 50 per cent, say β is a better prompt for reviewing goals than an anniversary nobody remembers. As a denominator: if you have used 80 per cent of a budget and 55 per cent of the year, the gap is the finding, and the percentage is only useful because both halves are measured the same way.
For the exact dates behind the quarter boundaries, use quarter dates; for the working days rather than the calendar days left in the year, working days in a year counts them; and if the year in question is a leap year, leap year checker says why the numbers above shift by a day. A live count to a specific date rather than a share of the year is what the countdowns do.
Frequently asked questions
When exactly is the year half over?
In a common year the midpoint is noon on 2 July: that date is day 183 of 365, with 182 days before it and 182 after. In a leap year the halfway point is midnight at the start of 2 July β 183 days on either side β and 2 July is then day 184. So the year tips over halfway on the same calendar date in both cases, just twelve hours apart.
Why do two year-progress trackers show different percentages?
Two conventions differ. Some trackers count the current day as already gone and some do not, and one day is 0.27% of a common year β a single percentage point covers only 3.65 days. The second difference is the clock: a bar running on UTC turns over up to a day away from your local midnight, so on 31 December it can already read 100% while your own calendar still has a day left.
What date is the year 25% and 75% gone?
The quarter mark passes during 2 April in a common year (91.25 days of 365) and during 1 April in a leap year (91.5 of 366). Three quarters gone lands on 1 October in both β 273.75 days in a common year, 274.5 in a leap year. Neither lines up with the calendar quarters, because Q1 is only 90 days and therefore ends before a quarter of the year has actually elapsed.
How we calculate this
Elapsed days are counted from the first midnight of the period to the midnight that starts your chosen date, and the percentage is that count divided by the length of the period. The day you are standing in is therefore not counted as gone β it is in progress β which is the convention that makes 1 January read 0 per cent rather than 0.27, and it is stated here because the other convention is equally defensible and produces a figure one day different.
Every period is measured against its own real length rather than an average: 365 or 366 days for a year, 90 to 92 for a quarter, 28 to 31 for a month, 7 for a week. Weeks run Monday to Sunday, the ISO 8601 convention, so a week bar reads 0 on a Monday morning and not on a Sunday.
